“A smart man makes a mistake, learns from it, and never makes that mistake again. But a wise man finds a smart man and learns from him how to avoid the mistake altogether.”
-Roy H. Williams
What’s your preferred method of learning?
While it’s true that some lessons are best learned through your own personal experience, it’s much wiser to learn from other people who have already experienced it and avoid making the same mistakes they did.
In life, we’re always learning. We’re either learning what to do, or what not to do. It’s best to find mentors worthy of emulating and not have to waste preceious time.
Alot of people talk about the 10,000 hour rule – how it takes 10,000 hours of practice, experience, or study to master something. This is true if it’s something that noone else has done and you’re starting from scratch.
Why not find someone that has spent 20,000 hours mastering something and learn how to avoid all the pitfalls and dead-ends in the learning process so you can master it in 5,000 hours?
Life is far too short to waste our time repeating the mistakes of the past or lone-wolfing it down well beaten paths when there’s short-cuts and dog sleds we can use along the way.
What’s your preferred method of learning? Are you someone who would rather lone-wolf it and make sure everything your learn is hard-earned, or are you the wise man that learns from the smart mans mistakes? Let me know in the comments below.
