Wednesday Wisdom #5: Lose Control of Things You Can’t Control

For this installement of Wednesday Wisdom, I want to talk about getting really clear about what our individual spheres of responsibility (SOR) are.

There is great wisdom in focusing on influencing things that are within our SOR. Much frustration, pain, and regret stems from trying to control things that are ultimately outside the perview of our control.

A common thing outside the realm of our control is the past. Harboring bitterness, resentment, and regret about circumstances or mistakes we’ve made in the past works against our vitality and sabotages the present.

We Can’t Change/Control the Past

While we can’t edit things that have taken place in the past, we can reconcile within ourselves to do things differently moving forward. A commitment to not repreat the mistakes of the past will help us atone for what we cannot change now. When others who we’ve hurt see the commitment to doing things differently, with time, they too will heal.

Who we are today and the choices we make now are within the realm of our control. When we double down on remaining commited to being the best version of ourself today, we seize the moment and strengthen our will.

The vitality of the present moment, combined with remaining in touch with our genuine self is our lifeforce. This is where REAL life happens.

Harness Each and Every Moment

The most powerful force on earth is the ability to decide.

Is this choice, in this moment, in life with who I really am and who I aim to be?

When we harness the power to influence each and every moment and maximize its potential to be a force for happiness, health, and healing, we are impacting our personal sphere of responsibility and that ripples out into the world.

The reverberations of being a force for good in the present moment has a profound impact on unforseen environments and circumstances.

Ripples that Influence Reality

When we try to influence reality without influencing our personal sphere of responsibility, we are abandoning our post and trying to cheat the system.

In doing so, we walk away defeated, let down, and frustrated.

When we take radical ownership of our personal sphere of responsibility and double-down on having a positive impact on our environment and those within it, we create ripples that flow outward and influence things outside our immediate SOR.

As Ghandi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

All wisdom hinges on recognizing what’s within our control and what isn’t.

When we do, much to our surprise, we are able to manifest a greater measure of control on things outside the realm of our control.

Establish the left and right limits of your personal SOR and spend all your time influencing the things and people within it, and you’ll be well on your way to changing the world.

Let me know in the comments below the changes you would like to see in yourself and this world.

A Little Bit About Me…

Hi, my name is Daniel Fortune. I’m a husband to 1, dad to 5, U.S. Army combat veteran, mental health advocate, writer, and public speaker currently residing in the central valley of the sunny state of California. I started the Minding My Own Madness Blog as with a vision to become one of the best personal development and mental health resource blogs. As someone who has battled with combat related PTSD and Bipolar 1 Disorder for 2 decades now, I intimately know the unique struggles people living with a mental illness face. Feel free to contact me at info@danielfortune.blog if you find yourself in crisis or would just like to say hi. I’m always just a message away.

I had the honor of serving with Fortune overseas. He is a solid guy and our relationship has lasted long after us both leaving the Army. He has helped me get out of dark places multiple times. I’m extremely grateful for his friendship and ability to sense when others are in need. Read his content, ask him questions, and journey well!

So glad I found this blog! It helped me find the mental health resources I needed and get out of a rough patch. Doesn’t hurt to shoot Daniel a message. He was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to respond to me. You won’t regret it. He’s a really cool, down to earth, and knowledgable guy who knows what it’s like to struggle. So grateful for this blog!
